Ubleis Logging

About

A family business since 1954

From a single machine in Fort St. James to operations across Western Canada.

Our story

Three generations, one standard of work

Bob Ubleis founded the company in 1954 in Fort St. James, British Columbia, starting with a single machine as the main logging contractor for the local mill.

His son Gordon Ubleis and son in law Ted Gardner, alongside their wives Christy Ubleis and Ruth Gardner, carried the company through its second generation, building the crews, the fleet and the reputation the business still stands on. Today Bob's grandsons, Rob Ubleis and Mike Gardner, oversee the companies.

"My father Gordon, and Mike's dad, Ted were integral in building the foundation of our business today."Rob Ubleis

Over seven decades the company has weathered the full cycle of the resource economy, including the loss of its largest customer in the 2008 downturn, when the business was rebuilt from close to a standstill. Each time, it came through by doing what it has always done: keeping commitments, investing carefully, and holding on to good people.

Today Ubleis Logging operates across Western Canada through Ubleis Logging Ltd., Eastside Logging Ltd., and FSJ Contracting Ltd., with more than 150 people, a modern fleet of heavy equipment and trucks, and a field record that runs from harvesting to roads, bridges, hauling, and civil work.

What we believe

The values we work by

Safety

We believe in creating and maintaining a safe work environment for all our employees, subcontractors, and the public who we share the land with. We are a SAFE Certified Company through the BC Forest Safety Council.

Sustainability

We are committed to complying with all applicable environmental laws and regulations. We strive to continually improve and reduce the impact of our operations on the environment.

Family

Family is very important to us and our employees and having a good work-life balance is key to our success.

Community

We are committed to building positive relationships and partnerships in our surrounding communities. Ubleis Logging Ltd. is dedicated to supporting local businesses, organizations, and non-profits.

Reliability

Ubleis Logging is dedicated to fulfilling the commitments it makes. We provide a high-quality service to meet the needs of our customers, partners, and our employees.

In the community

Part of the town, and the country around it.

In our communities

For more than seventy years Ubleis Logging has been part of the communities it works in, from its home in Fort St. James to the towns and territories across Western Canada where its crews live and work. We are a consistent sponsor and benefactor of the organizations that hold those communities together, from search and rescue and community foundations to minor sports, arts, and local events. We hire locally wherever we can, buy locally where it makes sense, and stay for the long term.

Working with First Nations

We have worked alongside First Nations in our operating areas for decades. That includes long standing agreements with Nations and their economic development corporations that secure employment and contracting within the territory, Indigenous subcontracting and workforce participation across our road and harvesting programs, and the mentoring of an Indigenous owned contractor from a single excavator subcontractor into a full scale civil company that now partners with us as an equal on major infrastructure work.

Safety underpins all of it. We are SAFE Certified through the BC Forest Safety Council, and as of 2026 we have worked two consecutive years without a lost time injury. The people in this photo are why.
